When Gary Sahota joined Van Kam ten years ago as an Owner Operator, he was already a seasoned driver with years of experience on the road. Starting at Van Kam felt less like a new beginning and more like a natural step forward. “It was easy for me. I already knew the work and what to expect.” Over the years, his consistency and reliability have become part of what customers count on.
The Airport Run
From his first day to today, Gary has been on the airport run, and it’s more than just a route. He’d been on it long before joining Van Kam, which made the transition seamless. “That’s just like a family to me,” he said. Customers know him by name, and he knows them by theirs. “Even if I’m late, I call them. They wait for me. Customers know me, what I’m doing.”
Gary already knew the route and the people before he joined Van Kam, so stepping in felt familiar. Still, there was a moment of proving himself. “Before me, there was another person who did that run for 45 years,” Gary recalled. “When customers saw me for the first time, they said, ‘No, no, we don’t have anything for you.’ Then I’d tell them, I’m with Van Kam now,” he laughs. From there, the trust carried over, and the relationships continued to grow.

A Day on the Job
His days begin with inspection and loading before heading out. “Sometimes I handle thirty deliveries, sometimes twenty. Twenty to thirty is normal for me,” Gary explained. His days often run from 9 in the morning into the evening, but he keeps his outlook simple: “If the customer’s happy, I’m happy.” “Sometimes people need a little help, so I give them a hand. I’ll drop something inside for them if they ask. They really appreciate it, and that makes me happy,” he adds.
Soccer at Heart
Gary’s lifelong passion has always been soccer. “I played for my university, and back in India, I played for my state. I’m an All-India champion,” he said proudly. He was set to join the junior national camp before an accident changed everything. “The day before camp, I had an accident. That changed my life, actually,” he recounts.
The love for the game never left. He went on to coach his son, who became an MVP for BC School Sports Boys Soccer, and now his eight-year-old granddaughter is carrying the tradition forward. When it comes to watching, there’s only one team that holds his loyalty. “Arsenal. Arsenal. They need more attackers.”
More Than Miles
For Gary, driving has never just been about deliveries. It’s about the people he sees every day, the customers who greet him by name, and the small ways he can make their jobs easier. After three decades in the industry and ten years with Van Kam, he keeps it simple: do the work, build trust, and treat people well. That’s what makes him proud of the road he’s still on.
